Fear Of Being Queer By Karen L. Cox And The Paradox Of...
Fear of Being Queer Queer is a term that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) people use to describe the entire LGBT community. It has made them feel like they have their own community where heterosexist people wonââ¬â¢t judge them. ââ¬Å"The term is used positively to say it is okay to be different and it serves as an inclusive category that encompasses the shared political and social experiences of the group (classnotes, 2016). Basing on this assertion, Queer Theory through the theme of lesbian isolation in a heterosexist world is seen in ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t Explainâ⬠by the ways the protagonist Letty recognizes her sexual orientation but denies it, demonstrates internalized homophobia, and the way Letty interacts with Delia and Terry. In addition, the articles ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re Here, Weââ¬â¢re Queer, Yââ¬â¢allâ⬠by Karen L. Cox and ââ¬Å"The Paradox of coming outâ⬠by Steven Petrow further proofs how queer theory is evident in ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t Explain.â⬠It is clear that stereotyping basing on sexual orientation has led to negative perceptions of different LGBT community members (McDonald, 2013). In most cases, lesbians have been painted as men haters or over-feminized just as gays have been portrayed as haters of women. These stereotypes do not apply to all lesbians but creates undue pressure on characters like Letty forcing then to live in fear because of being different. The fact that fictional lesbian visual representation has being distorted by heterosexuals males has caused Letty and her lot to conceal their true
Human Trafficking And Child Prostitution - 1145 Words
Every person in this world has to make a living somehow. The most unprotected and risky profession, in my opinion has to be prostitution. These men and women go to work without knowing who they will have to deal with and what could possibly happen to them. These individuals participate in this line of work not only to provide for themselves, but also for family members. In essence, the government should legalize prostitution because it would protect their rights, ensure safety, and benefit their health. I believe pushing lawmakers towards the legalization of this profession would be beneficial to sex workers. However, many may argue about the downsides such as human trafficking and child prostitution. This does not affect my view because if this profession is to be legal one could find, address, and reduce or hopefully eradicate these problematic issues. After conducting this extensive research, I believe I learned a lot about this profession. I gathered a copious amount of information from Sources such as Vice, ââ¬Å"Whores Gloryâ⬠, and online websites. These sources helped me understand the workers and what they have to face every single day. Also letting the people who are willing to listen to know what changes should be implemented. With these results I aim to prove why passing this law would help these individualsââ¬â¢ health and well-being. Solar Cooker Essay Example For Students
Solar Cooker Essay Solar cooker From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search In Ghana, Zouzugu villagers like this woman prevent dracunculiasis and other waterborne diseases by pasteurizing water in a CooKit solar cooker. A solar oven or solar cooker is a device which uses sunlight as its energy source. Because they use no fuel and they cost nothing to run, humanitarian organizations are promoting their use worldwide to help slow deforestation and desertification, caused by using wood as fuel for cooking. Solar Cookers are a form of outdoor cooking and are often used in situations where minimal fuel consumption is important, or the danger of accidental fires is high. The basic principles of all solar cookers are: â⬠¢Concentrating sunlight: Some device, usually a mirror or some type of reflective metal, is used to concentrate light and heat from the sun into a small cooking area, making the energy more concentrated and therefore more potent. â⬠¢Converting light to heat: Any black on the inside of a solar cooker, as well as certain materials for pots, will improve the effectiveness of turning light into heat. A black pan will absorb almost all of the suns light and turn it into heat, substantially improving the effectiveness of the cooker. Also, the better a pan conducts heat, the faster the oven will work. â⬠¢Trapping heat: Isolating the air inside the cooker from the air outside the cooker makes an important difference. Using a clear solid, like a plastic bag or a glass cover, will allow light to enter, but once the light is absorbed and converted to heat, a plastic bag or glass cover will trap the heat inside. This makes it possible to reach similar temperatures on cold and windy days as on hot days. â⬠¢Plastic Sheet: Uses plastic sheets to assure that liquids do not seep through into the oven. Also to prevent staining of the underlying sheet in the oven. Alone, each of these strategies for cooking something using solar energy is fairly ineffective, but most solar cookers use two or all three of these strategies in combination to get temperatures sufficient for cooking. The top can usually be removed to allow dark pots containing food to be placed inside. One or more reflectors of shiny metal or foil-lined material may be positioned to bounce extra light into the interior of the oven chamber. Cooking containers and the inside bottom of the cooker should be dark-colored or black. Inside walls should be reflective to reduce radiative heat loss and bounce the light towards the pots and the dark bottom, which is in contact with the pots. Box cookers Solar oven The inside insulator for the solar box cooker has to be able to withstand temperatures up to 150à °C (300 à °F) without melting or off-gassing. Crumpled newspapers, wool, rags, dry grass, sheets of cardboard, etc. can be used to insulate the walls of the cooker, but since most of the heat escapes through the top glass or plastic, very little insulation in the walls is necessary. The transparent top is either glass, which is durable but hard to work with, or an oven cooking bag, which is lighter, cheaper, and easier to work with, but less durable. If dark pots and/or bottom trays cannot be located, these can be darkened either with flat-black spray paint (one that is non-toxic when warmed), black tempera paint, or soot from a fire. The solar box cooker typically reaches a temperature of 150 à °C (300 à °F). This is not as hot as a standard oven, but still hot enough to cook food over a somewhat longer period of time. Food containing a lot of moisture cannot get much hotter than 100 à °C (212 à °F) in any case, so it is not always necessary to cook at the high temperatures indicated in standard cookbooks. Because the food does not reach too high a temperature, it can be safely left in the cooker all day without burning. It is best to start cooking before noon, though. Depending on the latitude and weather, food can be cooked either early or later in the day. The cooker can be used to warm food and drinks and can also be used to pasteurize water or milk. 1] If you use an indoor stove for your actual cooking, you can save significant fuel by using the solar cooker to preheat the water to be used for cooking grains, soups, etc. , to nearly boiling. Solar box cookers can be made of locally available materials or be manufactured in a factory for sale. They range from small cardboard devices, suitable for cooking a single meal when the sun is shining, to wood and glass boxes built into the sunny side of a house. Although invented by Horace de Saussure, a Swiss naturalist, as early as 1767, solar box cookers have only gained popularity since the 1970s. These surprisingly simple and useful appliances are seen in growing numbers in almost every country of the world. An index of detailed wiki pages for each country can be found here. Panel cookers Panel solar cookers are very inexpensive solar cookers that use shiny panels to direct sunlight to a cooking pot that is enclosed in a clear plastic bag. A common model is the CooKit. Developed in 1994 by Solar Cookers International, it is often produced locally by pasting a reflective material, such as aluminum foil, onto a cut and folded backing, usually corrugated cardboard. It is lightweight and folds for storage. When completely unfolded, it measures about three feet by four feet (1 m by 1. 3 m). Using materials purchased in bulk, the typical cost is about US$5. However, CooKits can also be made entirely from reclaimed materials, including used cardboard boxes and foil from the inside of cigarette boxes. The CooKit is considered a low-to-moderate temperature solar cooker, easily reaching temperatures high enough to pasteurize water or cook grains such as rice. On a sunny day, one CooKit can collect enough solar energy to cook rice, meat or vegetables to feed a family with up to three or four children. The Dung Beetle, What a Marvelous Creature. EssayIf wanted, the solar cooker may be checked every one to two hours, to turn the cooker to face the sun more precisely and to ensure that shadows from nearby buildings or plants have not blocked the sunlight. If the food will be left untended for many hours during the day, then the solar cooker is often turned to face the point where the sun will be when it is higher in the sky, instead of towards its current position. The cooking time depends primarily on the equipment being used, the amount of sunlight at the time, and the quantity of food that needs to be cooked. Air temperature, wind, and latitude also affect performance. Food cooks faster in the two hours before and after the local solar noon than it does in either the early morning or the late afternoon. Larger quantities of food, and food in larger pieces, take longer to cook. As a result, only general figures can be given for cooking time. For a small solar panel cooker, it might be possible to melt butter in 15 minutes, to bake cookies in 2 hours, and to cook rice for four people in 4 hours. However, depending on the local conditions and the solar cooker type, these projects could take half as long, or twice as long. It is difficult to burn food in a solar cooker. 11] Food that has been cooked even an hour longer than necessary is usually indistinguishable from minimally cooked food. The exception to this rule is some green vegetables, which quickly change from a perfectly cooked bright green to olive drab, while still retaining the desirable texture. For most foods, such as rice, the typical person would be unable to tell how it was cooked from looking at the final product. There are some differences, however: Bread and cakes brown on their tops instead of on bottom. Compared to cooking over a fire, the food does not have a smoky flavor. Advantages Solar ovens are just one part of the alternative energy picture, but one that is accessible to a great majority of people. A reliable solar oven can be built from everyday materials in just a few hours or purchased ready-made. Solar ovens can be used to prepare anything that can be made in a conventional oven or stove ââ¬â from baked bread to steamed vegetables to roasted meat. Since solar ovens are placed outside, they do not contribute unwanted heat inside houses. Nearly three-quarters of US households prepare at least one hot meal per day; one-third prepare two or more. 13] Many of these meals could be made in a less fuel-intensive way using a solar oven, although people living in apartments or townhomes have little or no outside space to use a solar coooker. The indoor concentration of health-damaging pollutants from a typical wood-fired cooking stove creates carbon monoxide and other noxious fumes at anywhere between seven and 500 times over the allowable limits. Disadvan tages Solar cooking is a new approach to cooking in many parts of the world, so a big challenge is social acceptance of this totally new approach and abandonment of traditional cooking methods, such as the three-stone fire. Solar cookers provide hot food during or shortly after the hottest part of the day, when people are less inclined to eat a hot meal. However, a thick pan that conducts heat slowly (such as Cast Iron) will lose heat at a slower rate, and that, combined with the insulation of the oven or an insulated basket, can be used to keep food warm well into the evening. Solar cookers take longer to cook food compared to an oven. Using a solar oven therefore requires that food preparation be started several hours before the meal. However, it requires less hands-on time cooking, so this is often considered a reasonable trade-off. Solar cookers are less usable in cloudy or rainy weather, so some fuel-based backup heat source must still be available to cook food at these times. Some solar cooker designs are affected by strong winds , which cool the food and can disturb the reflector. Solar cooking projects Students perform an experiment, using a solar cooker built out of an umbrella. eeeeeBakeries in Lesotho Michael Hones of Germany has established solar cooking in Lesotho, enabling small groups of women to build up community bakeries using solar ovens. Darfur refugee camps Cardboard, aluminum foil, and plastic bags for well over 10,000 solar cookers have been donated to the Iridimi refugee camp and Touloum refugee camps in Chad by the combined efforts of the Jewish World Watch, the Dutch foundation KoZon, and Solar Cookers International. The refugees construct the cookers themselves, using the donated supplies and locally purchased Arabic gum, and use them for midday and evening meals. The goal of this project was to reduce the Darfuri womens need to leave the relative safety of the camp to gather firewood, which exposed them to a high risk of being beaten, raped, kidnapped, or murdered. 17] It has also significantly reduced the amount of time women spend tending open fires each day, with the results that they are healthier and they have more time to grow vegetables for their families and make handicrafts for export. By 2007, the Jewish World Watch had trained 4,500 women, and had provided 10,000 solar cookers to refugees. The project has also reduced the number of foraging trips by as much as 70 percent, thus reducing the number of attacks. Indian solar cooker village Bysanivaripalle, a silk-producing village that is 125 km (80 mi) northwest of Tirupati in the Indian state of in Andhra Pradesh, is the first of its kind: an entire village that uses only solar cooking. Intersol, an Austrian non-governmental organisation, sponsored the provision of powerful Sk-14 parabolic solar cookers in 2004. Gaza Some Gazans have started to make solar cookers in order to cook their meals, due to a lack of cooking fuels. The cooker is made from cement bricks, mud mixed with straw and two sheets of glass. About 40 to 45 Palestinian households are said to have started using these solar cookers.

Manual Aesthetics and Techniques Samples â⬠MyAssignmenthelp.com
Question: Discuss about the Manual Aesthetics and Techniques Answer: Benefits of massage in body conditions In this context, the benefits of massage therapy have been identified to provide relief in some of the aggrieved physiological conditions. The present study focuses on the importance of manual aesthetics in the treatment of long-term conditions. For the present study, a number of body conditions have been focused upon such as oedema, the stiffness of the joint and hormonal imbalances. There are a number of benefits of the massage therapy for the management of the prevailing conditions. Thus, a regular message of the painful areas of the body by a licensed therapist can help in improving mobility in people with the stiffness of joints. As asserted by Parikh et al. (2017), massage therapy has shown to produce an antagonistic effect by lowering the production of stress hormones such as cortisol. Additionally, the concerned therapy has been seen to reduce the synthesis of the neurotransmitter substance P associated with a sensation of pain in the body. Data gathered from research and experiments have asserted that a number of neurohormones such as dopamine and serotonin are released into the body as benefits of the massage (Bervoets et al. 2015). Effect of a condition on the homeostasis of the body Hormones are chemical messengers composed of polypeptide chains synthesized by the endocrine glands. They have a widespread mode of action and produce effects on an organ distant from the site of synthesis. Thus, the metabolism of the human body is dependent upon hormonal regulation. Therefore, the disparity in optimum levels of hormone synthesis can affect the homeostasis of the body (Bervoets et al. 2015). This condition is often known as homeostatic imbalance and can affect a wide range of conditions such as diabetes, dehydration, abnormal tallness or dwarfs. For example, the and the cells of the pancreas synthesize insulin and Glucagon respectively. The hormones have been known to maintain the volume of sugar in the body by covering the excess Glucose into Glycogen and vice-versa. As commented by Park et al. (2017), abundance in glucose concentration can result in glycemic shocks often resulting in a coma in few cases. Need of a medical clearance The contraindications for hormonal imbalances may vary from person to person depending on the type of symptoms produced. In the context of diabetes, an imbalance is produced between the levels of insulin and glucagon. The condition is known as hyperglycemia and can produce a range of clinical conditions in the patient. Some of these include fatigue, the frequent need of urination, glycemic shocks, increased levels of palpitations and anxiety in the patient along with delayed healing of wounds (Barreto Batista, 2017). Therapeutic measure for improvement of the body condition In this respect, the Swedish massage system could be used for the range of aesthetic benefits that it provides. The Swedish massage movements can be divided into the following three types such as Effleurage, where gliding massage techniques are applied covering different parts of the body. This further facilitates the process of blood circulation driving toxic substances to the lymphatic ducts. Petrissage is a technique where the muscles of the body are kneaded to produce relaxation by releasing serotonin. Rhythmic tapping to enhance blood circulation can be used to provide relief in stressful conditions by generating more epinephrine in the blood. The epinephrine plays an important role in regulating the homeostatic condition of the body. Epinephrine plays a pivotal role in controlling the level of blood glucose level. It induces the release of more glucose into the blood stream by converting the stored glycogen into glucose. As commented by Park et al. (2017), such conditions prepare the body to cope up with emergencies. The therapy is useful for the treatment of diabetes associated secondary effects such as Rheumatoid arthritis due to tissue necrosis. Moreover, the method can also be helpful in the treatment of hypoglycemic conditions where blood glucose level falls below the normal. However, as argued by Field (2016), people with Type I diabetes may find it difficult to convert the excess glucose back to glycogen. As suggested by Field (2016), the Swedish massage therapies have seen to reduce the levels of vasopressin and arginine in the blood. Similarly, the hormones have been found to reduce the levels of inflammatory cytokines in the blood along with cortisol. Designing of a suitable treatment plan An effective treatment plan needs to be designed for treatment of physiological disorders. Thus, hormonal imbalance is often chronic in nature and may span for a lifetime. Thus, anti diabetic medications along with proper rest and care can help in controlling elevated blood glucose levels. Moreover, light exercises such as brisk walking taken on a regular basis can prevent cardiac ailments, which are often secondary risk associated with diabetics. Plan of action: Mode of treatment Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Medicinal treatment Light exercise and change in diet Evaluation and follow up Table 1: Gantt chart (Source: Learner) Analysis: For obtaining positive results, the patients suffering from hormonal imbalances were made to go through a four weeks treatment. In the 1st week, the patients were mainly put on supplementary hormone therapy. They were made to go through a 14 days medicine follow up to relieve the symptoms associated with chronic metabolic disorders. For the next two weeks, the patients were put under light exercises and vitamin rich diets. The exercises helped in controlling the anomalies in the level of blood sugar maintenance. The patients receiving the treatments were put under screening procedure in the 4th week. The pros and the cons of the methods were further analyzed to decide the future course of action. Advantages and Disadvantages of Fiber Optic Cable Verses Coaxial Cable
Advantages and Disadvantages of Fiber Optic Cable Verses Coaxial Cable Introduction Fiber optic cable and coaxial cable are both used in data transmission. Today, various information networks use either fiber optic cable or coaxial cable in order to transmit information between several telecommunication devices such as telephones, radios, television sets among others.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Advantages and Disadvantages of Fiber Optic Cable Verses Coaxial Cable specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Both cables have advantages and disadvantages, which a user should consider before making a choice. For instance, a user should consider the distance of connection and the amount of data to transmit. Therefore, this paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of fiber optic cable verses coaxial cable. Description of Fiber Optic Cable and Coaxial Cable A fiber optic cable is made of an ultra-fine fiberglass core, which is protected by an outer covering (Shelly 493). The cables use light in order to transmit data via tinny fiberglass cores known as silica. On the other hand, coaxial cables transmit data through copper cores, ââ¬Å"which are surrounded by a dielectric insulator, a woven copper shield, and a plastic sheathâ⬠(Shelly 493). Therefore, the coaxial cables are properly shielded from any kind of interference by environmental conditions. Coaxial cables also depend on electricity as a medium of transferring data. Fiber optic and coaxial cables exist in various forms. Advantages of Fiber Optic Cable Verses Coaxial Cable Fiber optic cables have several advantages over coaxial cables. First, fiber optic cables carry large volumes of data over long distances without much loss of information. This is made possible due to the several silica cores that make up the fiber optic cables. However, coaxial cables have a limited capacity of data transmission and often suffer from signal leakage leading to weak signals. Second, the fiber optic cables are smaller and lighter as compared to coaxial cables. Therefore, installations of fiber optic cables require lesser space and engineers also find it easier to handle the fiber optic cables. Third, fiber optic cables enhance data security because it is difficult to tap information easily from the network system. Additionally, optical fibers are ââ¬Å"immune to electromagnetic interference from radio signals, car ignition systems, and lightningâ⬠(Bagad and Dhotre 8). Last, fiber optic cables incur much less operating cost because they consume little electric power.Advertising Looking for essay on other technology? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Disadvantages of Fiber Optic Cables Verses Coaxial Cables Despite the advantages that fiber optic cables have over coaxial cables, they also have a number of disadvantages. For instance, optical fibers are more expensive as compared to coaxial cables that are cheaper (Bagad and Dhotre 7). Therefore, a number of people are not in a position to install them. Similarly, installations of optical fibers require well-trained personnel because their installation is usually difficult as opposed to the installation of coaxial cables. Last but most important, fiber optic cables are more suitable in transmission of data over long distances hence coaxial cables are more suitable for data transmission over short distances. Conclusion From the above discussion, it can be concluded that fiber optic cables are more efficient and effective in data transmission as compared to coaxial cables. Fiber optic cables help in the transmission of large volumes of data over long distances without interference from electromagnetic noise. On the other hand, coaxial cables are cheaper to install but only suitable for data transmission over short distances due to signal leakage, which leads to weak signals.
